CBD Oil – Depression and Anxiety
Today, let’s talk about CBD oil and how it can help with depression and anxiety.
Depression and anxiety are the top two mental health disorders, among almost 1 billion people suffering from a mental disorder worldwide.
The Lancet has reported that depression and anxiety are costing the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year. In general, poor mental health resulted in reduced productivity and was estimated to cost the world economy approximately $2·5 trillion per year in 2010, and the numbers are expected to rise to $6 trillion by 2030.
It has already been proven that for every US$ 1 invested to improve treatments for common mental disorders like depression and anxiety, there is a return of US$ 5 in improved health and productivity.
But despite the facts of huge economic loss and the high return of investment caused by mental health disorders, it has been reported that countries are only allocating an average of 2% of their health budgets to mental health problems.
Despite the very minimal budget for mental health problems, many treatments are already available and the numbers keep increasing. However, almost 75% of people with mental disorders remain untreated in developing countries with almost 1 million people taking their lives each year, according to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA).
CBD Oil and How It Can Help with Depression and Anxiety
Researchers believed that CBD can help with depression and anxiety by supporting the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the body to function regularly. ECS is the system that controls every internal function of the human body such as movement, pain sensation, immune responses, temperature, mental functioning like perception, mood, memory, and many other functions.
When ECS is not at its best state, internal malfunctions start to occur which can result in many anomalies in the human body including depression and anxiety.
CBD may also work by interacting with other neurotransmitter systems in the body, such as the serotonin and dopamine systems, which are involved in regulating mood and pain perception. Though the causes of depression and anxiety are still unknown, researchers have found out that those who are experiencing depression and anxiety disorder have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is not functioning optimally.
Ways we know CBD helps
- Interaction with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS): CBD interacts with the ECS, which is a system of neurotransmitters and receptors that plays a role in regulating mood, stress response, and anxiety. CBD has been shown to increase levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is associated with feelings of well-being and happiness.
- Interaction with Other Receptors: CBD may also interact with other receptors in the brain that are involved in anxiety, such as the GABA-A receptor, which is involved in regulating anxiety and stress.
- Anti-inflammatory Effects: CBD has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, and some research suggests that inflammation may play a role in the development of anxiety disorders.
- Neural Regeneration: There is also some evidence to suggest that CBD may promote the regeneration of neurons in the hippocampus, which is a part of the brain that is involved in regulating mood and anxiety.
